Its a pity Eoghan Harris no longer has a newspaper column. The wailing this weekend would be epic.

Fionnan Sheehan's "Chappaqidick" stands out in particular because you'd either have to be a total political anorak or about 75 to understand the reference, and even then you'd think the tragic death of a young woman is not really the same as doing some work for the banks. Not serious people.
Only matched by John Lee in the English mail who spoke about Connolly shooting someone a la the Trump popularity thing.

Lee was animated on TV a few times screeching that Connolly shouldn’t be allowed stand.

He’s got 7 years to get used to it.

But for me Connollys team should be ringing Alan Kelly to thank him for his sad interventions.

Once Kelly opposed Connolly she had the election won.

As an aside, whatever other opinions you may have on Martin McGuinness, he unquestionably did the state some service in undermining Gallagher.
I'll never forget that night..Martin McGuinness giving Gallagher that cold stare...."I'm cautioning you now, Sean" in that chilly, menacing McGuinness tone

Gallagher fell apart under that onslaught

It was tv gold.

We needed some moments like that this time out, to liven up those dire tv debates

That debate was great fun.

Remember Gallaghers big gulp after his envelope mention mistake.

There was way too many debates this time between two candidates. They seemed to be on the radio every day for a debate.

Humphries was a poor candidate which FG might have found out if they hadn’t rigged her contest with Kelly for the nomination.

They then run the most negative campaign in history where all their spokespeople spoke constantly about Connolly without mentioning their own candidate.

And that video was a disgrace.

CC is out of the race and the election is cancelled. It’s not on the rte website, t.v., the radio but seen it on Facebook so it’s definitely true. :D

I have read some dopey comments and that's up there with the worst of them.

Also FG sickens me, I particularly dislike the condescension.
There will be a lot of people holding their noses and voting for Connolly. I will be one of them

Add the nose-holders to all those young people who have flocked to CC's "movement", and you get a substantial win.

A lot of the air seems to have gone out of the "Maria Steen/spoil your vote" balloon, so I don't know what's happening there

My opinion is if FFG had allowed Steen on the ballotpaper, most of her second prefs would have gone to Heather. Its obvious most of the Steen supporters would be very conservative, and more likely to favor "FG Mammy" Heather rather than Connolly.

One of my sons (the other one is part of the Connolly "movement") is doing the same, and refusing to vote for the first time in his life.

I just can't bring myself to not vote. The guilt would kill me. Good citizenship and all that stuff. Especially after harassing my adult kids when they lived with me, and insisting they vote no matter what

It's not that I think CC will make a hash of the Presidency. Heck, even Sean Gallagher would probably have been fine . He would have read whatever script was put in front of him, shook hands with the people he was told to shake hands with, his very attractive designer-clad wife and cute kids by his side. How hard can it be? All those officials and experts helping you....

No, it's just that CC has disappointed me, and I was totally on board with her at the beginning

But her dodging serious questions that are important to me...The whole victim thing and her supporters whining about "smears" when they themselves were out of the traps "smearing" Mairead mcGuinness about "drowning babies" before the campaign even started properly...

I don't want to reward all that.

But it looks like I am going to.

I can't vote for the other two.

Spoiling my vote for the first time ever. Would never in a million years vote a FFG candidate after what's they've done to the country these last few decades and Connelly in frankly a nutcase and a dangerous nutcase at that.

Heather Humphreys victory could pave way for Eire to rejoin Commonwealth

Indeed, now that Southern Ireland is geographically isolated from the rest of the EU, perhaps the best way forward for the Southern economy with more Donald Trump economic tariffs on the way is for Eire to join the UK in quitting the EU

It seems that there is no revolt against Simon Harris in FG on foot of the latest polling which shows CC sweeping the board on the first count

FG are "bracing themselves" and seem fatalistic about the result

"We lost our source of transfers" [Gavin dropping out]

"We were one party against five" [ the broad support for CC across all Left parties]

The Burke family are appealing for people to back Heather. This might be the push she needs for victory tomorrow.

The final push into the political abyss. Connolly will succeed by a comfortable margin.

Democratic duty done. From what i could see of the crossing out, turnout between 20-25% locally.
