RTE Radio reporting "overhwelming votes" for Connolly from initial Dublin boxes opened.
Even from middle-class areas, they exclaimed.
Spoiled votes in second place :)
Gavin in third.

Dublin boxes indicate ‘Connolly will win comfortably’ - Humphreys

In the RDS, former Labour Party TD Kevin Humphreys is saying his initial scan of boxes throughout Dublin. Indicate that Catherine Connolly will win comfortably and that the election result can be called before noon.

Thon exit poll will be binned.
That passed the time.
It would have passed in any case.
Yes, but not so rapidly

that's an even bigger hammering than anticipated.

But spoilts not matching reports from the tallies? eg currently 26% in Dublin South Central

Perhaps people leaving the polls embarrassed to tell exit pollsters they spoilt their vote.

Tbe "spoil your vote" brigade seem to have stayed at home.

No hope of Gavin getting his expenses for FF, I suppose?

Not even a contest.

Martin and Harris may as well have set fire to themselves.

Yes, I see that. Sorry.

Somewhere in Donegal, CC is on 80%!

I have Donegal connections, and never realised there were so many Lefties up there :)

Catherine has won it handsomely

She'll be fine

Everyone will wish her luck

Am I right in saying a candidate needs to have a quarter of the quota to get expenses paid?

It's 12.5 %.

Jim Gavin is on 7 % approx at the moment

Listening to RTE at the minute, my takeaway at present is that government and FG in particular seem incapable of just not learning anything from this debacle.

There might be a new thread on this, but...

We all know who will take the blame, but who will take the credit?

SF's backing was indeed, as Mary Lou said, a "gamechanger"

SF have social media nailed down, and are master strategists

Young people really got behind CC, and in general young people (if my own adult kids are anything to go by) don't tend to read hard copy newspapers or watch RTE

Amazing the impact of that "keepy-uppy" video. It seems that dribbling a football is important in a President.

There was a huge number of volunteers on the ground for CC also, dozens of them in every rural town and locality. . Many of these were young people who had no experience of politics. Many of them were organised by SF

So it was indeed a "movement"

Who will benefit?

The Soc Dems may be a bit cross that CC is not exclusively seen as "their" candidate, or that their input is not appreciated.

SF will benefit, of course

So will Ivana Bacik, who has pushed Connolly from the beginning, and is associated in the public mind with CC. (Alan Kelly is a loser here, but he's no loss)

That tweet was doing the rounds last night while the exit poll was ongoing

I don't think she will damage the country, if her stint as s Barrister is anything to go by

She was clearly able to keep a strict division between her personal values as a Left activist and her professional work as a barrister, work which was sometimes in conflict with her own personal beliefs.

Presumably she will do the same as President.

I am going on her pronouncements during the campaign.

Connolly will be great for Ireland in that she will make the reunification of our country a live issue. We patriotic Irish people are delighted.

It looks like spoiled votes running as high as 15% in a few constituencies. The Steen protest campaign seems to have had an effect.

Negative campaigning (1926-2025) died after a short illness. Houses strictly private. Donations in lieu of flowers to "the gaping hole in FF finances, 65-66 Mount Street Lower, Dublin"

If you haven't some form of "negative campaigning" you would have no campaign at all

Everyone being "gracious" and agreeing with each other, everyone blathering about being a voice for the Irish people and being a president for all the people, blah-de-blah....That won't get you through a 6 week campaign

Where you have a contest, you will have friction. Otherwise you have no contest

Some will call this friction a "smear". Others will call it "holding a politician to account"

It is easy to be positive and gracious when you are miles ahead in the polls. In fact, that is your best tactic. Stay quiet, remain "gracious", hope to spin out the weeks of campaigning without a serious implosion.

But when you are miles behind in the race, you have to go into attack mode, and hope that you land a punch

It is not the negative campaign itself that was the problem, it was FG's ham-fisted deployment of it

They went after CC on the wrong issues (the barrister thing) instead of calmly, politely and forensically smoking her out on the serious stuff she was dodging.

It is hilarious to see opposition parties whining about "smears" and "negativity". SF's entire schtick in the Dail is harping on endlessly in total attack mode, Pearse Doherty being the very embodiment of "negativity". Any mud they can throw will be thrown.

Their supporters all over social media were "smearing" Mairead McGuinness for "drowning babies" before the campaign even started.
