My uncle grew up in Ireland in the 70s and 80s. Everyone he talked to wanted to move there. He grew up and lived in California for some time, moved to other countries and then came back.
As a professor in college, he says that most people he's talked to now have a mixed view of the States and while they might want to visit, far more don't want to live there due to the race issues, gun violence, lack of safety net.
No country is perfect but I feel that America has really gone south in the last 30 years or so.

I also grew up in 70s-80s Ireland, and although I never availed of it myself, it was considered the most natural thing in the world to apply for a J1 visa and head off to the States (... and maybe not come back, green card or no green card
) and, of course, the Returned Emigrant (with Notions) was a major stereotype of the time too.
