It’s a flat out lie to claim you can say anything on TV in a country where no politician from either of the two main parties have been asked a hard question in 10 years, where graft and corruption is rarely mentioned, where only one side of any social debate is given real airtime, and where every TV channel has loudly and strongly taken a side in every referendum.
In terms of what is allowed on TV, Ireland is barely better than North Korea, just a little more subtle.

Does the US have a similar offence as assisting an offender or aiding and abetting?? Surely he’s a textbook case?

Yes, we have something called The legal term ‘aiding and abetting’ in the US, a legal term that refers to a person’s action to help, support, or approve of someone else’s illegal act. Aiding and abetting is a crime in itself, held against those who would somehow assist a criminal, short of physically contributing to the illegal act. But it might not be easily prosecuted in this matter as he didn’t know the assassin and merely was merely trying to give cover for the killer. But his actions did lead to confusion in the crucial minutes immediately following the shooting, Therefore he was charged with obstruction of justice, instead.
