Burke family, Castlebar

Reading this story in the IT and it struck me as a bit odd: WRC throws out solicitor’s unfair dismissal claim against Arthur Cox
Sacked solicitor Ammi Burke’s unfair dismissal claim against law firm Arthur Cox has been thrown out by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) after her summons request for additional witnesses and repeated interruptions by her mother prevented the hearing from proceeding for more than five hours on Friday.

Ms Burke also demanded that senior counsel for the defence withdraw his remark that the Burke family was like a “travelling circus” – calling it “highly defamatory”.
Sounds pretty mad behaviour for an Arthur Cox solicitor. Her response to the travelling circus remark was that "“My family is held in very high regard in the local community in Castlebar, Co Mayo."

So I googled Burke family, Castlebar... Plenty of results, eg: Gardai escort Burke family member out of Galway court after NUIG case ruling
Four members of one Mayo family have lost a religious discrimination case against NUI Galway, following a ruling at Loughrea Courthouse on Monday.

Siblings Enoch, Isaac, Kezia and Ammi Burke took a case against the college following their expulsion from participating in college societies in 2014, for what the University deemed to be numerous breaches of their code of conduct.

The siblings were all members of the Christian Union Society, which promoted scriptural Christian belief.

The ruling caused tension among members of the complainant's family, leading to the ejection of a member of the Burke family from the courtroom.
Seems like there are 10 Burke siblings, all named after biblical characters and all notable for a) very high academic achievement and b) causing an absolute ruckus everywhere they go, falling out with everybody.

Mad stuff altogether!

People like that in every province. Very much leaning on past laurels.

Don't see anything wrong, scandalous that a solicitor called her family a traveling circus, typically Ireland, anyone who doesn't conform is ridiculed.

Just read the full article.
The commission was told on Thursday by Ultan Shannon, a partner in the firm’s banking and finance group, that the incidents had included Ms Burke “having a go” at the most senior partner in her division after the partner sent an email inviting her to a lunch with two other new solicitors on her team to “celebrate” her qualification :D

From reading the reports, it looks to me that the family don't know how to act in the real world and social norms for the professional world. Having a go because someone invites you to lunch with others for congratulations when it's the norm in professional circles shows the lack of understanding.

I get the impression they think they are everyone's intellectual superior. The rest of us plebs must look up to them and should bow before them. That's not how the real world works

If the published account of the various interactions with colleagues and senior partners is true, she’s a flippin’ looper.

Hard work anyway and the mother being a school teacher is no surprise. Teachers of a certain generation hate to be told to STFU. They think they have all the answers and cannot be wrong.

If I was there, half my popcorn would have been scattered on the floor from the laugh I’d have had.

As principal of the Burke Christian School, It's unclear how many kids other than her own she has actually taught. Certainly don't think it is oversubscribed - http://www.bcs.ie
At Burke Christian School, we believe it is imperative that children receive a godly education – providing a foundation for life.

Did you read the article?

They weren't heckling the girl or her family, they were heckling the coroner for his verdict.

The girls family wanted the cause of death recorded as medical misadventure (as did the Burke's) after she contracted, and died from, Covid while under the care of the HSE. The HSE wanted it recorded as natural causes. The coroner's ruling was that it was natural cases and the Burke family heckled him for doing so.

As supposed legal eagles, they should know that there are correct avenues for disagreeing with the judgement of a court (appeals). Shouting abuse isn't the correct way of doing it.

God love them looking for a job, or anyone named Burke from Castlebar. I can imagine a lot of employers would see the surname and run.

I think the mother lets her temper get the better of her sometimes. They remind me a less extreme version of the Westboro Baptist Church in the US that Louis Theroux did a few docs on.

Credit where credits due though, she home-schooled all 10 of them herself and every one of them went on to higher education including a few to Oxford and Cambridge.

Always sounds extra gutterish when a woman uses that term.

There's standing up for what you believe and acting the maggot interrupting a function to shout your beliefs. The principal offered to take the discussion away from the service but no, they persisted to interrupt.....

Good night so!

Granted, when it comes to that family, always read on. The juicy bits are always buried in the body of the text!

They remind me of a lady who sued RTÉ for 2 million. RTE contested and won. She appealed - and RTÉ won again.
Her dad was on the Late Late Show with Gay Byrne.

Another interesting family

Did I read of them being involved in another controversy, this time involving Wilson's Hospital school, a big Cof I school in Westmeath? I barely skimmed the article but I saw the name Ammi Burke and I thought, more nutjob stuff.

Same story. See RTE link above. I'd agree the "They" thing is a load of blx but I think the way he drew attention to it was the main problem.

I do wonder how all the Bourke children seem to be exactly the same. Often a family will have kids all into different stuff but it seems here all are very fundamental Christian with none gone off and rebelled against the parents beliefs.

I've got a question about them, if any of ye could answer, it would satisfy my curiosity and explain a mountain of other questions & issues

What Church do/did they attend on a Sunday?

You see, I got to a small (Presbyterian) Church in Galway that had loads of students in it who were in NUIG with these guys. Every week on Sunday we prayed for the Christian Union in NUIG as it appears there was loads of strife & infighting. I started to enquire as to what the nature of it was... at the heart of it was the Burke Family. They seemed to agree on nothing and didn't respect the democratic nature of the group, who may have had various different 'flavours' of Christianity.

The upshot was, with all the to-ing & fro-ing with the college authorities etc. , no solution was found so the Christian Union split. The members didn't want that to happen but they just couldn't function with the Burke family. The up shot was that at one point in NUIG there was a Christian Union where the officers were entirely made up of... the Burke family https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burke_family_(Castlebar) and a couple of other people, and every other Christian was in the Dochas Group

Now the Dochas group had members, who belonged to churches so they would consult their pastors/priests/elders/vicars etc. But who were the theological consultants in the Burkes life? Their Dad or Mum?
Who ever it is seems to see no issue with the Christian life & conflict.
They seem to have missed the Beatitudes in their theological studies Matthew 3 '... Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.'

They've an online presence

Well, I heard on the wireless than he's cooling off in Jail. No harm to him to have a period to cool off. The question of right or wrong for the pronoun isn't the big issue, the issue is ignoring a lawful high court order that was granted after his behaviour.

Blimey, is that a criminal record then?
