Not to mention their nuclear weapons programme!
Exactly!!!
Imagine how much of an impact that money could have on their sick and twisted society that thinks gang rape of children is perfectly acceptable … but no, let’s go to the Moon where American went 54 years ago!

Horrific things happen in India. Mind bending stuff.
It's a corrupt country full of inequality. Caste system. Etc.
But I also happen to know there are millions of truly lovely people there and I'm happy for their tremendous achievement in putting a spaceship on the moon. Well done, Indians x
When I saw the thread title that song immediately popped in to my head So weird

It’s almost akin to various African leaders swanning around and then hosting the African Cup of Nations whilst putting doe eyed kids on Concern ads to get us to cough up.
The most basic prevention at the height of AIDS was to wear a condom - some nutjob went to the UN in the mid 80s and said it was “an affront to African men” or some such guff. Whilst millions of their people were contracting it.
At some point we have to accept some people can’t be helped and not everyone needs it. They can play on colonial guilt all they like, we were just as colonised!!

I was surprised to hear that India could afford to invest in the technology, and all the other massive costs involved to send a rocket to the moon.
They're currently ranked 130th on the world's richest countries list. Thats pretty low down considering there's only around 195 countries in the world today.

Tough to take that list seriously when they add the caveat, “ A word of caution about these statistics: the IMF has warned repeatedly that certain numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, many nations in our ranking are tax havens, which means their wealth was originally generated elsewhere which artificially inflates their GDP.”
That list is GDP per capita. In the list of total wealth India ranks 7th along with Germany and the UK of course they can afford it with their 1.4 billion population.

The moon rover will come out of the Chandrayaan and spend 2 weeks analysing mineral composition of the soil and assessing water supply on South pole of the moon.
I think it is better for all of us when other parts of the world do well. If India develops economically, technologically, scientifically, etc, it's better for the whole world rather than having a billion people languishing in a country that isn't doing well.
Same with Africa, Middle East, Far East etc - better for us that living standards and wealth and development and scientific advances come right up in these countries.
And projects like this one, even if vanity projects, raise the self esteem and ambition and hope of the country's citizens. Making kids more dedicated to school, making young scientists feel pride, attracting investment into the country.
The whole project cost 73 million dollars in US money. It's an attractive proposition then for external investors. Indians deserve to do well..as do people in all countries that are not as salubrious as ours.

Congrats to the Indians! NASA could take lessons from them in budgetary control too!
But that richest country in the world stat is bullshit. It's been artificially inflated by mega corporations passing money through our books. It doesn't stay stay in Ireland and never even physically arrived! A more accurate measurement is GNI which shows actual income - but even that doesn't demonstrate income inequality. We're still number 6 in the world for GNI per capita though.
More importantly, even though India's GNI per capita is a tenth of ours, theirs is multiplied by 1.4 billion citizens and ours by only 5 million. So the cost of a space program for India is literally buttons...

India is getting on with it ... NASA are wasting billions on making sure they have the quota of non binary disabled trans women of colour on the team!!

The little thing some people seem to forget is that if the likes of India develops to the same level as us in the West, then the planet is well and truly fooked.
As for your point about the Middle East, parts of it are very well developed, yeah the ones at the bottom in some countries like Yemen may be poor but most of the countries are pretty developed.
I agree with others India should start taking some of their people out of living in squalor and to preordained lives of misery before they start their vanity projects.
Ah but shure that might not be high on the list of higher caste hindus who still want to see some consigned to a life as a shit shoveller or rat catcher.
Maybe some might be interested to know that some Indians are so discriminatory that they didn't want lower cast fellow Indians to be able to work for the likes of the Dells of this world.
Their only place in these companies was meant to be as cleaners.
I can see the kids of the untouchable dalit caste Indians just dreaming about how they will be rocket scientists in the future and not the ones that have to scrap the dead bodies after tsunamis.
