In the movie, Gravity , there's a lovely representation of how the space-junk cascade can spiral into massive devastation. Most of us can happily live with the loss of a few of these "niche" satellites, but I wonder how soon it'll be before we hear of TV transmissions - or some of the Starlink constellation - being taken out of service.
There's a nice quote in the South China Morning Post version of the same story, from the guy who joined the dots:
“We’ll do a little and we’ll just keep it on the edge of being OK,” he said of how governments were likely to handle the problem of space junk. “I’m basing that on how we’ve dealt with every other environmental problem that humanity’s ever faced.”
I understand that this will be more or less a routine event for Starlink. There are, even now, over a thousand of them and, of course, being in LEO they are not in nice tidy static locations. IIRC each …login to view the rest of this post
