Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
It never really went away entirely and there's pockets of deprivation everywhere. It's street entertainment and kids tired of video games, glue sniffing and weed, need some outlet. It could be worse this time if not stopped as there was no social media back in the 1970's but today every asshole can get on YouTube, TikTok etc.

This is it, in my opinion. Petrol bombs for social media likes rather than for political motivesDel.Monte wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 4:43 pm It never really went away entirely and there's pockets of deprivation everywhere. Drew Harris will solve that issue fast when he sub contracts his new recruits from Afghanistan, Syria, Georgia etc etc.
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Not.
I visited Derry in December 2019. this doesn't woo me back.
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Emma Vardy has a good report on Creggan yesterday. I think it captures the personalities of the agitators. Which is mostly (from what I can see) idiocy plus adrenaline multiplied by ignorance.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
The children of the original agitators are still being raised in estates divided along religious and sectarian lines, attending schools divided along religious and sectarian lines, and socialising in completely separate cohorts. This happens almost exclusively at working class/underclass level.
The middle classes are far more integrated both residentially and educationally. That's your answer right there - disaffected and brainwashed youth.
I spent 6 years living and working in the North and left more depressed about it than when I arrived just after the GFA was signed.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
The irony of it is that if and when the British and the RUC/PSNI eventually leave their little part of the world, nothing is going to change. Sure there will be the euphoria of "wrap the green flag round me boys" for a couple of years but very soon the realisation will dawn that they still live in shitsville and their circumstances are not going to radically change because the flag flying from official buildings is not the flag of the Union. Who will be the object of their ire then, and indeed their counterparts in loyalist estates?Cyclepath wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2023 9:09 am The children of the original agitators are still being raised in estates divided along religious and sectarian lines, attending schools divided along religious and sectarian lines, and socialising in completely separate cohorts. The PSNI are blocking estates and having checkpoints all week in the run up to this (compare this to the messing that went on in newtownard including the leaving of evidence on street to be burnt,or the abdication of search's around noah Donohue case)
,the statistics around stop & search by the psni are 67% nationlist/Catholic
Some of subtle stuff they done and suspensions given are very very shocking, particularly that suicide victim who's image was shared in psni WhatsApp groups
I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting em about their local area....I don't particularly agree with attacking em,but they aren't a police force worthy of blind respect/trust either and a clear out is needed soon enough for em....was only few months ago, there was talks of needing to reintroduce the recruitment quotas

God above this biden visit is as much over saturated coverage as when the queen died
We used rightly poke fun at the absurdity of that, while the establishment and media here fall over emselves over this visit,

One thing I'll say for the Biden visit; never seen so many Gardai out on the beat. Literally two or three uniforms near every bridge along the grand canal. Great to see them out of the stations and patrolling the streets. The missus has never felt safer walking around the city...

Yes thank God.
When I feel the heat of a Russian nuclear bomb melting my face , my last thought will be "Well at least that Orange Hitler is not president"
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Out of the stations me arse, more like there won't be any Garda backup in any rural town within 100 miles.Cyclepath wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 10:14 am One thing I'll say for the Biden visit; never seen so many Gardai out on the beat. Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
These guys don't want Catholics in the PSNI, you saw what happened in the Derry /Tyrone area when Catholics joined the PSNI and were shot and bombed in their places of work and recreation. No, these guys want the status quo to persist, they want the police to come into these areas looking for explosives and petrol bombs and stirring up the local deprived youth who are their recruiting ground, they don't want any sort of normality to return to these areas so that somebody might think about inward investment or even, heaven forbid, FDI. No, that wouldn't suit their narrow minded agenda one little bit, better that the residents of these areas are condemned to permanent poverty and deprivation.Setanta wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2023 11:25 am The PSNI are blocking estates and having checkpoints all week in the run up to this (compare this to the messing that went on in newtownard including the leaving of evidence on street to be burnt,or the abdication of search's around noah Donohue case)

It’s not just rural towns, Garda from other cities are running a skeleton staff.

They don't want anyone joining a police force backed up by the British army imo,marhay70 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 11:32 am These guys don't want Catholics in the PSNI, you saw what happened in the Derry /Tyrone area when Catholics joined the PSNI and were shot and bombed in their places of work and recreation. noone wants the status quo to persist of the British army being used as backup regularly....a few weeks ago, there was serious proposals on table to demilitarise the psni,
I think it's time they begin to justify saturation policing of areas and account for the amount of stop/search they carry out, with minimal stuff caught .....the notion they (and gaurds here) can't be critised and should be blindly trusted needs challenging IMO

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
The Catholic Police officers killed and maimed were branded as touts by the thugs who operate their own little fiefdoms in areas of Derry and Tyrone . We are not talking about an ordinary everyday policing situation here. I myself have been in areas of West Belfast, on the Falls Road and Andersonstown where police used to use saturation patrolling as you describe, but that was because there was a perceived threat. That threat does not exist any more so that method of patrolling is also defunct, indeed you will often see saloon cars rather than Land Rovers. If the perceived threat disappeared in Derry, then I'm sure the same would happen, but that wouldn't suit the overlords, so it will be necessary to root them out.
When do you see the British Army on the streets of NI? Usually only when there's been a bomb threat or attack, they are not a feature of policing and needless to say, if intelligence suggests that they are not needed they are withdrawn. These are all measures agreed as necessary by all parties in the North

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
When did stormont agree or have input upon the measures for British soldiers backing up the police force??,this is a dictat from Westminster....famously shinners come under a sticky wicket for having to vote to have the RAF deliver hay to isolated sheep in mountains ...but they have no say as regards the deployment of soldiers to back up sweeps/searches around attacks?marhay70 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 7:06 pm The Catholic Police officers killed and maimed were branded as touts by the thugs who operate their own little fiefdoms in areas of Derry and Tyrone . A few weeks ago, there was a (thankfully) failed attack on a psni vehicle in Strabane, and the psni/soldiers held an estate of roughly 1000 people in what was effectively an open air prison where noone was allowed enter/leave for to attend school's/hospital,and never issued an apology to that community or noone holds em to account for this carryon either.....the psni are at a dangerous junction, people can see their carryon isnt appropriate or porportionate and noone is being held or holding em to account
(take for instance their saturation policing of perceived threat and contrast with their leaking of info of contractors who were to remove a bonfire in Belfast to the uvf)...I don't see the point for these policing boards,if they are simply to rubber-stamp and cheerlead for the police?
