Art - Paintings

#1

Post by isha »

Just a general non-sophisticated eye-candy type of collection.
I enjoy lots of different kinds of paintings, from pop culture doodley stuff to old religious icons to pretty much any genre in between. Anything goes - share whatever you like - I like looking at most things! These starter images are random..

Image

Salvador Dali. Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man (1943)

Image
Tsherin Sherpa. Tibetan. Also does traditional Thangka restoration and art.

Image
Tomasz Kopera. Lived for a good while in Coleraine. I think he has gone back to Poland now. I meant to visit his studio while he was up North - another thing I did not get round to...

Image
Android Jones. AKA Andrew Jones. Yup, I like the cosmic stuff.

Speaking of which, cosmic stuff from a lot longer ago...

Image

Salvator Mundi by Leonardo DaVinci (1499-1510)
The painting depicts Jesus in an anachronistic blue Renaissance dress, making the sign of the cross with his right hand, while holding a transparent, non-refracting crystal orb in his left, signaling his role as Salvator Mundi and representing the 'celestial sphere' of the heavens. Approximately thirty copies and variations of the work by students and followers of Leonardo have been identified
Will finish this morning with something more restful..

Georgia O Keefe - Light Coming On The Plains II (1917)

Awesome.

Image

Interesting story about it being found - https://theculturetrip.com/europe/irela ... in-dublin/

I saw one Caravaggio in person - The Beheading of St John the Baptist in St John's Co-Cathedral in Malta. Even my irony-saturated young adult children were reduced to silence and wonder when they stood in front of it.

That first Salvador Dali one is like a "Yes" album cover - full of interesting things but not one for the Sitting Room.

I just admire Del, ain't got a bean. I have prints of stuff I like. The only paintings on my walls are my own feeble efforts  and even they are kept to rooms that are not in general use.

I haven't a bean either but I'm lucky as I tend to like obscure artists that can be picked up quite cheaply - finding them can be the hardest part. Here's by far the roughest painting in my collection - broken glass, filthy and obviously an attic find but interesting as it shows the Kish lightship (another of my interests) and picked up for very little at a Dublin auction last year.

I remember being fascinated by the illustrations in a book about Bosch before I could even read, his stuff had a quite the effect on me

How about this one from Ulan Bator, Mongolia by a street artist named Ganbaatar. I paid £5 or near that figure for it on eBay in 2017 - to a dealer - so God knows what pittance the artist received. I've used it for a Christmas card since and have tried to track down the artist but with no luck to date.

:) Bosch suits your username and avatar, Banshee.
He must have felt like a bit of an odd ball in the 1400s.

Here's an Art Deco one by a listed Scottish artist Violet MacNeish Kay (1914-1971). Produced as artwork for an unpublished Christmas card it ticked all the boxes for me and it's another that I've reproduced as a Christmas card myself.

It looks very peaceful, I have long had a hankering to live for a while in a yurt. Some day maybe!

There is no direct correlation other than they come from parts of the world that remind me of each other, but I thought of this artist when I saw your Mongolian painting. The styles are completely different.
I love the whimsy and joy in Wang Yiguang's work. He is born Chinese but has taken his inspiration from Tibet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Yiguang

I can't even stand the tone of that twats voice so won't be listening. There's a very good illustrated biography of Bosch out there, pricey but worth it.

Two pretty Wicklow watercolours by the late Terry Williers (1935-2011) for which I paid €130 including delivery back in May this year. The British born artist was best known for his cartoon work in local and national newspapers as well as on Hall's Pictorial Weekly on RTE. They are outside the scope of my collection and I'll probably sell them on eventually.

Caravaggio would have made one hell of a cinematographer. His understanding of light has few equals and none of his time. I have reservations about the Salvator Mundi being by Leo. Maybe tiny bits of it, but it's so outside of his style in so many ways.. Plus it's been so (over) restored it's nearly a new painting.
Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I was the underbidder on this last night but only for resale purposes. A pretty Victorian watercolour of Sandycove, it sold for nothing (£16.60) but all these small purchases add up especially when I'm saving for a big sale in October.

Two more cheapies recently added to my collection - the botanical watercolour is a piece of original greeting card art by Esmé Eve (1920 - 2001) a noted English author, illustrator, fabric and greeting cards designer and cost just £25 incl.delivery; and a handpainted postcard seascape, unsigned, but too nice to leave for somebody else and another bank breaker at just £3.50 incl.delivery.

This is definitely in the wrong thread but ....Banksy's painting 'Girl with balloon' renamed 'Love is in the bin' sold last night for £16 million, that's sixteen times the £1 million that was paid for it in 2018. Some clever marketing done since the previous auction but is it art? Is Banksy one person? Should anybody care anyway as his (?) only talent is in making money rather than painting? The art world at the top end is no more than a money making machine for an elite circle of artists, galleries, auction houses and the super rich - not too mention the myriad of shadowy financiers in the background.

“Cork Harbour at Sunset” oil on canvas (33″ x 50″) by George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (c.1806 – 1884) , sold at Adam’s Townley Hall sale – 19/10/2021 for €44,000.

A one-time ships carpenter, inspector of shipping and self-taught artist, Atkinson earned a passable living depicting Cork's maritime environs. His paintings often commemorate major events in Cork Harbour, for example the 1849 visit of Queen Victoria. Noted for his acute observation of weather conditions, of sea, clouds and sky, and also in the accuracy of his rendering of ships and their rigging. His paintings were, until recently, in the almost affordable bracket for ordinary maritime art collectors. More examples of his work can be seen here: https://irishartindex.wordpress.com/a/

I wouldn't be mad about his cubist style paintings although I am sure they would be very impressive in person. But if I was ever in Madrid ( will I ever be allowed travel again!) I would love to go see Guernica.

Also like this one from his blue period. Blue Nude.
