Mainly for postcard pictures. A fascinating glimpse of people and places fadó fadó. Here's today's find - an early advertising card for the Waverley Hotel showing the less fashionable end of Sackville/O'Connell Street.

Prior to the Easter Rising, Home Rule for the entire island of Ireland had looked to be on the horizon and a visit to Dublin by King George V & Queen Mary in 1911 had gone down generally well. However, card manufacturers and others lost the run of themselves and produced drawings, postcards etc showing the King arriving to open a New Irish Parliament at the old Irish Parliament buildings on College Green. Apparently, these drawings and postcards were widely on sale during the 1911 Royal visit.

Trooping the Colour - Dublin Castle 1905. Only for the card caption you could be forgiven for thinking this photograph was taken on the neighbouring island. Whatever your political views it's hard to argue that anybody does military pageantry quite as well as the British. The nearest the Republic came to similar pageantry was the short-lived "Blue Hussars" (1932-48) who acted as a Presidential escort and were replaced by a motorcycle unit.

It’s curious how topical (even controversial) some postcards were in the past. Images of the Rising were all the rage back in 1916.

That aftermath of the Easter Rising card makes me think how beautiful O'Connell Street could have been if some of the buildings that were destroyed had been replaced with small public parks instead of 'things' like the awful BHS building that eventually grew up beside the GPO.

I don't remember the Regent Hotel in D'Olier Street but here's a 1969 artist's impression on a card by Bryanston Galleries, Baggot Street - also long gone. No sign of the artist - Lapidge - either.

I remember the Regent, It was one place you could get a pint on St. Stephen's night, you had to be in before 6pm though as they closed the doors. It was hard to make the few bob last the night and still have something left for the Crystal Ballroom. It was a bit of a dump really.

Here's an interesting view by Valentines. I haven't been near Killiney Hill (except on the Rosslare train) in decades and I wonder if the tea rooms still exist?

Great picture. I pass by/through TCD twice a week and probably 50% of those open spaces are gone
