Don't get many here but had a call from 00302848722866. Greece? - Beware of Greeks bearing gifts?
Wouldn't have been bothered by it but I was outside a couple of rungs up a ladder painting a soffit and when I came in in hurry I kicked and nearly fell over the dog. I know people call back if its important but last week at almost the same time I got a very important call from my wife that needed urgent action (loss of purse with credit card - later found).
The only answer I have for these guys if they ever get through (this call just cut off a few seconds after I picked it up) is - "Does your mother know what you do".
I recently had my landline fixed by Eir - it has been sitting there silent for months, but because of the fairly remote location and frequency of loss of mobile signal, it is better to have a fall back. It has since been rechristened the Scam Line. By far the majority of calls are nuisance calls.
Thinking out loud, and trying to be occasionally less wrong...
We have seen a major uptick in nuisance calls (I'd call them something less polite). We are getting them at least 2-4 times a day. Nobody even calls the landline anymore except my parents, everyone else uses our mobiles.
Even on the mobiles its getting annoying, just had a call from an 085 number claiming to be from the "Department of Social Welfare Department" in a posh english accent, yeah really!, needless to say that got hung up on and blocked.
At least we can easily block spam numbers on the mobile and report as spam (in Android, assume iPhones are the same) but the land line is a PITA.
Definitely thinking of ditching the landline altogether at this stage.

I'm surprised that anyone that has good coverage for a mobile phone has a landline at this stage unless its part of a broadband deal.
most of the broadband providers give you a landline without extra cost these days
Yep have it as part of my Virgin broadband package. Feel locked in as i'd need to get a landline installed now if i wanted broadband from anyone else.
Wish we had Siro here, would sign up in a heartbeat.

Two calls recently really annoyed me because if it was an older person they would get a fright. One said my PPS Number had been linked to criminal activity. The other, yesterday, purported to be from Amazon, saying a (bogus) 1400 euro transaction (supposedly) by me on my account had been temporarily suspended - if I wanted to verify press 1 etc. I actually had to go afterwards and cgeck my Amazon account was not hacked because it sounded quite official.
Pain in the arse

My wife who is normally smart to these things asked me about the Amazon one as she wasn't sure about it and maybe it was about something I'd bought

Wife got one about PPS and criminal activity yesterday too, I feel we need a adblocker type app for mobile calls at this stage.
I've no idea where they get the numbers. I recently got a new work number to use as a "bat phone" which I have not used to sign up for anything or entered anywhere on the internet, yet I get way more spam calls on that than on my other two numbers that are all over the place!
they use an auto dialler that just increments the number dialler by 1 digit each time, if they get a ring tone, voicemail or an answer the auto-dialler takes note and passes the "real" number into a database, and sends the "no ring tone" numbers to the thrash, to be re-used at a later date.
There isn't a human being sitting there dialling numbers on the initial fishing expedition - at some later date, if you do get a real human, your number will have been successfully fished by an autodialler in the past.
Or the numbers were found in some compromised data leak.

Ah, that makes sense, I just assumed they culled all the numbers from that Facebook leak or the HSE and put them in an autodialler.
Yes, that does happen too, but the ones where there is a robot voice talking about a compromised PPSN are definitely incremental diallers searching for real numbers.

How bloody annoying. There should be stiff criminal penalties for people who organise this kind of thing!

Advice please. Family member got silent call from 01 6660000. It says in some places is a scam call. But it also says is Garda Headquarters.

.....
How can that be?
If you know how, you can set your caller ID to anything you like and appear to be anyone you want to be.

That's mad though. My family member phoned me wondering if they should contact guards back. I said if they really want you they will find you! But that is a bad scam.

I used to have a spare phone extension in work. Used to log onto the phone system and change the name to things like God or Santa Claus.. used to have great craic with it...
There's really nothing the gardai or anyone can do about these scammers when they are based abroad. Just hang up is the garda advice
They are impersonating every government body and agency under the sun now, I would feel sorry for older people who are more trusting aren't clued in to these type of scams.
