Launched on the 16 of November 2016, the mainstream media scoffed at them and said they wouldn't last. In a country dominated by FF-FG since the foundation of the state, the mere survival of an ideologically driven political party is a victory. The other political parties merely provide the illusion of choice but they are all in agreement when it comes to the big issues - gay marriage, immigration, the EU. The National Party provides an alternative and that can only be a good thing for democracy. Ar dheis ar aghaidh.

When party supporters are telling you that "mere survival . . . is a victory", that's an elliptical way of admitting that the party has found no traction with voters and has zero electoral appeal; they can't point to any achievement of the party beyond not actually dying.
