French Priest Murdered by Arsonist

Very sad story emerging from France. It seems that an illegal immigrant from Rwanda, who torched Nantes Cathedral last year, was offered, out of Christian charity, shelter and a home by a French Catholic priest. He subsequently murdered the priest before turning himself in.

French Catholics have had a hard time in recent years. This particular case seems bizarre, you would think the perpetrator either would have been ejected from the country or held on remand until his trial for arson.

Not deported because he was on trial for the arson.. and released on bail then for that. I'm guessing being released into the care of the priest was part of the bail conditions. Very sad to see charity and care for people having such an awful ending.

Terrible and sad.
I think this story is about the psychological illness of the perpetrator, in the case of both crimes he has committed - I don't know why he would have been released back from psychiatric care to the Abbey and Father Olivier Maire. It seems Father Maire went towards the risk himself but I think that should not have been facilitated by authorities.
Politicians should not use such stories for their purposes.

Think this an issue world over... judicial system is too slow to get to these things. Lad is a headcase and needed the help he deserved

It seems he was given an expulsion order in 2019. However, he was able to remain in the country only to nearly destroy Nantes cathedral and murder this poor priest.

An arsonist shouldn't be given bail, they pose too big a risk to public safety.
